Experiment on operational process of a polo shirt


Introduction:

Polo shirt is one of the stylish apparels in the world. This type of shirt could be made of cotton or synthetic fibers. Its sewing operation is done with great care. It is near similar to Tee shirt. After passing the cutting section different cut parts are assembled in the sewing section by sewing operation.


Objective:

  1. Finding out the operational process of assembling different parts.
  2. Analyzing over different stitches & distinguish seam used in the polo shirt
  3. To know about different parts of polo shirt.

Different Parts of a basic polo shirt:

  • Collar
  • Placket
  • Pocket
  • Back part
  • Front part
  • Sleeve
  • Sleeve hem
Machines needed:
Lockstitch, over lock stitch, Flatbed, Button holing & button attaching machines are mainly required for sewing a basic polo shirt.

Operational sequence of a polo shirt:

Box/ placket sewing
Pocket joint with front body part
Solder joint
Half-moon joint with back part
Collar joint with body part
Sleeve joint with body part
Sleeve batch joint (left & right side)
Body hem sewing
Side part joint

Box & placket sewing:

Placket is very important part of a polo shirt. So it is done with great care. Placket has two parts one is button stand another one is button holing. Upper part contains button holes & lower part contains buttons.

Upper part joint

Stitch type: Lockstitch
Seam type: Edgeneating & lapped

Lower part joints

Stitch type: Lock stitch 
Seam type: super Imposed

Solder joint:

Stitch type- Lock stitch
Seam type- Bound seam.

Half-moon joint with back part:

Stitch type- lock stitch
Seam type- lapped

Collar joint with body part:

Stitch type- lock stitch
Seam type- lapped & bound

Sleeve joint with body part:

Stitch type- lock stitch & overlock
Seam type- Edge neating

Sleeve batch joint (left & right side):

Stitch type- lock stitch & overlock
Seam type- Bound

Body hem sewing:
Stitch type- Flat lock
Seam type- Lapped

Side joint:

Stitch type- Over lock
Seam type- Super imposed

Comments:

Now a days polo shirt is not only in basic style but also available in different styles & design. A lot of decorative combination of sewing work gives very stylish appearance to the polo shirts, such as embroidery, decorative seam, decorative stitch etc. By doing this experiment we have achieved a clear overview about seam, stitch & operational sequence of polo shirt.
